BIG SKY SERIES
|

|

OTHER ECHINACEA
ECHINACEA pallida 'Hula Dancer' New Very narrow white petals with a pink tinge on 32ins. upright, unbranched
stems.
|

|
ECHINACEA paradoxa Yellow Coneflower Indeed a paradox with yellow flowers instead of the more usual pink/purple versions. Strongly
upright, 30in., unbranched stems carry large, showy, brilliant yellow flowers
measuring 5-6ins. across, with a prominent brown, central cone. The way in
which a single flower is displayed at the end of a long slender stem lends a certain elegance to the clumps. Native to relatively small, dry, prairie
habitats in Kansas, Arkansas and Texas, plants are well adapted to dry areas and make an excellent choice for the hot, drier, mixed border. Blooms
extends over a long period, starting in late spring and continuing into mid summer. Zone 5.
|
|
ECHINACEA purpurea 'Baby Swan White' New
Bright white flowers on compact plants with multi-branched stems, 20ins. high.

orange cone. 30in. tall, well branched stems. Blooms from mid to late summer. Zone 4.

|

|
purpurea 'Green Envy' New
A breakthrough color for Echinacea! Green,
rounded petals with touches of pink towards the base encircle a green cone.
Grows 24in. tall. Distinctly different from any other coneflower we've seen and
we think its a keeper. The rounded, uniquely cupped or spooned petals retain
their green color for a long period and eventually become mostly overspread with mavue/pink. Zone 4.
|
|
purpurea 'Kim's Knee High' A compact cultivar, about 2' tall with lots of big, clear pink flowers.
purpurea 'Lilliput' New The most compact coneflower yet. Grows only 16-18ins tall with a dwarf, mounding

coppery-orange cone. A spot of E. 'Rubinstern', selected for its impressive size and horizontal petals.

horizontally and somewhat upfacing around the dark center cone, fragrant. Zone 4.
purpurea 'Virgin' New Large, fragrant, pure white flowers with with a double row of petals and a green cone.
Selected for its improved flowering performance. 24ins. tall.
tennesseensis 'Rocky Top Hybrid'
A hybrid of the endangered Tennessee coneflower with cheerful, bright pink
3 to 3½" flowers with narrow, inward curving petals, 24-30". Blooms summer into early fall, zone 4.
ECHINOPS (Globe Thistle) Bold, showy plants, undemanding and easy to grow in any ordinary, well drained garden
soil. Flower heads are dense spiny globes, excellent for cutting and drying. Taller species are good back of the border
plants; smaller species combine well with Heleniums and Daylilies.
bannaticus 'Blue Glow' Deep blue globes on 40in. branched stems in summer.
tienschanicum Tennis ball sized, silvery-white flower heads on tall, 4-6ft, plants with spiny, thistle-like foliage.
EPIMEDIUM

somewhere around 6ins., with foliage subsequently reaching 20ins. high.
grandiflorum 'Dark Beauty' New Large, antique rose and white flowers rise 12ins. above velvety, chocolate
-purple new spring growth. Blooms in May.

x rubrum 'Sweetheart' New Dainty, dark rose-red flowers with pale yellow centers on slender stems in early
spring. Light green foliage is delicately trimmed in burgundy. An Epimedium of some bulk, 16ins. tall with large, texturally interesting leaves.

An older, larger variety that is still much sought after. Soft, butter-yellow

spring, turning crimson in fall. Blooms mid to late May.
|
|

flower stalks soar upwards to 5ft. carrying large clusters of creamy-white, yucca-like flowers. Adapted to sunny, dry places. Zone 5.

abundance of small, blue, pincushion-like flowers. Hard to imagine a better subject for both fresh and dried
arrangements. Prefers hot, sunny, very well drained locations. In this case, " well drained" does not translate to dry
and infertile as plants actually prefer a, rich, fertile site though one that is well drained.
ERYSIMUM
allonii (Siberian Wallflower) Showy clusters of very fragrant, deep orange flowers bloom on 18" stems
all summer. Shortlived but worth replacing for its long blooming, bright orange flowers and strong fragrance. Zone 5.

provide. Most prefer fertile, moist soils.

|

|
EUPATORIUM maculatum 'Gateway' (Spotted Joe Pye Weed)
Very similar to E. fistulosum
'Atropurpureum', but smaller in stature, to 5'.
|
|
purpureum 'Little Joe' Compact and upright growing, this is the cultivar for smaller gardens, to 4'. Mauve
flowers in Aug.-Sept.
rugosum 'Chocolate' Handsome purple/burgundy foliage contrasts nicely with the clusters of small white
flowers that bloom in late summer. Grows 3-4' tall, with a neat, compact, spreading habit and is at its best in rich,
moist soil, in full sun. Great contrast plant. I've paired it with Peroskia for a dynamite burgundy, blue and silver
combo. Hardy to at least zone 5, and probably colder.

Plants with attractive foliage and long lasting, highly colored "flowers", which are actually bracts.
Easy to grow in well drained garden soil, pest and disease resistant, long-lived.

An improved E. purpurea with larger, dark, reddish-green leaves that are beautifully displayed in
whorls up the length of the stem, and long yellow flower spikes in spring 2ft. high.
Resistant to mildew. As the common name implies, this spurge prefers at least
afternoon shade, also moist but well drained soil with a higher pH. Zone 5.
|
|
EUPHORBIA characias 'Silver Swan' New See Temperennials
EUPHORBIA corollata One of the longest blooming perennials, summer into fall. Showy masses of tiny, dainty

bloom and, when finished blooming, plants maintain their garden appeal with attractive foliage on sturdy, almost
shrub-like stems. Carefree and hardy to zone 4.
|

|
EUPHORBIA polychroma 'Bonfire '
Bonfire' is the first spurge to keep its brilliant foliage color all season long! Leaves
emerge green but then turn dark red as they mature and retain
this color throughout the season. Tightly packed foliage on
upright stems form a dense, compact mound. Chartreuse
bracts in spring contrast dramatically with the red foliage.
Colorful from spring til fall. Matures at 12ins. high by 15-18ins. Zone 5.
|
|
|
|
EUPHORBIA polychroma 'First Blush' Dazzling foliage with green, white
and pink variegation and showy yellow bracts in spring. Neat, clumping habit,
better behaved and more refined looking than Lysimachia p. 'Alexander'. We
have it in full sun and it looks great but have read that it will do just fine in part
shade. 12-18ins. tall. Zone 5.
